When most couples begin planning their wedding flowers, they usually know one filler flower by name: baby’s breath.
And honestly? There’s nothing wrong with baby’s breath. It has earned its place in wedding floral design for a reason. It’s soft, airy, romantic, and timeless. But one of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is stopping their exploration there simply because it’s the only filler flower they know.
What many couples are actually drawn to is not necessarily baby’s breath itself — it’s the delicate texture, softness, movement, and fullness that filler flowers bring to an arrangement.
The good news? There’s an entire world of beautiful filler flowers beyond baby’s breath that can elevate your bouquet, personalize your wedding style, and create a far more intentional and unique design.
As a wedding florist, filler flowers are some of my favorite elements to work with because they often become the detail that transforms an arrangement from “pretty” into something unforgettable.
What Are Filler Flowers?
Filler flowers are used to fill the spaces between focal blooms in bouquets and arrangements. They help complete the design by adding:
- texture
- movement
- softness
- fullness
- dimension
- shape
- personality
They are often added toward the end of the design process, but that doesn’t mean they are an afterthought. In many cases, filler flowers are what give an arrangement its overall feeling and style.
In fact, I’ve designed bouquets where the majority of the arrangement was made up of smaller, textural flowers rather than large focal blooms. One wedding that especially stands out to me was Bailey’s wedding at Schweitzer in Sandpoint. The bouquet had this misty, layered, airy quality made up of lots of delicate elements working together, and it became one of the most memorable designs I’ve created.
Why Filler Flowers Matter More Than Most Couples Realize
Most people think of filler flowers simply as something that “fills space,” but they do much more than that.
Filler flowers can completely change the personality of a bouquet:
- airy and whimsical
- refined and romantic
- organic and garden-inspired
- modern and sculptural
- rustic and textural
- soft and ethereal
They influence how a bouquet moves, photographs, and feels emotionally.
Two bouquets can contain the exact same focal flowers, but changing the filler flowers can make them look entirely different.
That’s why choosing filler flowers intentionally matters.

- Waxflower (Chamelaucium) – Waxflower is hands-down one of our favorite filler flowers and one of our go-to choices for weddings. It has tiny delicate blooms, incredible texture, and a long vase life. It also carries a soft lemony scent that couples love. Waxflower comes in shades like pink, cream, lavender, and white, and can even be dyed into more adventurous colors. For couples who love the softness of baby’s breath but want something a little more elevated and refined, waxflower is often the perfect upgrade.
- Hypericum Berries – Hypericum berries add texture and dimension in a completely different way. Available in shades of red, burgundy, coral, green, and white, they create depth and richness inside arrangements. They work beautifully in fall weddings but are versatile enough to pair with flowers year-round.
- Astilbe – Astilbe has a soft, feathery texture that creates beautiful movement in bouquets. It’s romantic, airy, and incredibly elegant. Some varieties can be seasonal and a bit more premium in price, but the impact they create is worth it.
- Bunny Tails – Bunny tails are playful, whimsical, and full of personality. These fluffy preserved grasses can add softness, texture, and even a subtle editorial feel when incorporated thoughtfully. I especially love preserved elements when they help tie a wedding into a location or story.
- Calycina – Calycina resembles heather with tiny star-shaped blooms on long branching stems. It has an adventurous, organic feel that works beautifully in textured garden-style designs.
- Ginestra – Ginestra creates height and movement with tall stems and clusters of petite blooms. It pairs especially well with more sculptural floral designs and taller arrangements.
- Heather – Heather adds incredible texture and richness to bouquets. Its tiny blooms stretch along branchy stems and create fullness without feeling heavy. It’s perfect for couples wanting a more organic, layered design style.

Seasonal and Local Filler Flowers Can Make a Wedding Feel Extra Special
One of my favorite things as a florist is incorporating filler flowers that are seasonal, local, or meaningful to a couple’s story.
In spring and early summer, locally growing spirea, lilac, and lavender can be absolutely stunning. These flowers don’t just look beautiful — they help connect a wedding to a specific season and place.
I also love when couples bring personal meaning into their florals.
One bride asked us to incorporate wheat into her bouquets because it reflected her family heritage and tied into the Palouse landscape that meant so much to her. Those thoughtful details are often the elements that make wedding flowers feel deeply personal rather than simply decorative.
The Biggest Mistake Couples Make With Filler Flowers
The biggest mistake isn’t choosing baby’s breath.
It’s assuming baby’s breath is the only option.
Most couples simply haven’t been exposed to the incredible variety of textures, shapes, movement, and personality that other filler flowers can bring into a design.
If you love delicate, airy flowers, there’s a good chance you’ll love many of these alternatives too — maybe even more.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Be Afraid to Think Outside the Box
When planning your wedding flowers, don’t limit yourself to only the floral names you already know.
A conversation with an experienced florist can open the door to flowers you’ve never heard of but instantly fall in love with.
Filler flowers may seem like a small detail, but they often become the element that gives a bouquet its personality, artistry, and emotional impact.
So if you find yourself saying:
“I think I want baby’s breath…”
Try asking instead:
“I love the delicate look of baby’s breath — what other options might fit my style even better?”
